&*Sitting and Reading under Shady Trees Yün shou-p’ing (1633-1690) Ch’ing Dynasty Yün shou-p’ing (sobriquets Nan-t’ien and Yün-shi wai-shih) was a native of Wu-chin, Kiangsu. The very talented Yün Shou-p’ing, a gifted poet and calligrapher, was the leader of the “Six Gentlemen of Pi-ling.” A masterful painter, he is considered the equal of artists such as Wang Shih-min. Yün was one of the “four Messrs. Wang, the Master Wu, and the Master Yün”, six of the most famous painters of the Ch’ing dynasty. The scenery of this painting includes a wooded garden with strange rocks, plantain and wu-t’ung trees, and man reading as he sits in the open balcony of a thatched hut. The brushwork is delicate and abbreviated, and the composition stable; this painting does not depend on the dark shade of dense woods or thick forests on deep crags to express the pure elegance of a summer day.
